1) Hello world and Comm 245. My name is David Markowitz and I’m a sophomore Communication major. This is me in a nutshell: I’m an avid musician, playing various instruments on and off campus. I write a lot of my own material and it’s my favorite thing to do. In the future I hope to work for a record company (similar to what I did this summer at Universal Motown Records), and play/record my own music on the side. Making it big in the music industry is a long-shot, but you only live once, right? I sing in Cayuga’s Waiters (for those Cornellians who know), and I enjoy long walks on the beach. Very cliché, yes very cliché.
2) The internet-related phenomenon that I am most interested in is Instant Messaging and chat rooms. I am intrigued how total strangers can connect on such a close level, minutes after they meet each other. Additionally, due to the fact that anonymity is so strong in these situations, how can each person trust the other individual with sometimes, very personal information after just minutes of interaction? I am also interested in the psychology of online personality databases such as Facebook. Specifically, what does the information provided on each person’s profile, truly reveal about that person? Regarding false information, what causes someone to provide fallacies about themselves? These questions may seem obvious at first glance, but I would find it very interesting to obtain knowledge regarding psychological patterns that reveal why people disclose certain information about themselves on the internet.
3) The first internet phenomenon I discussed would be a part of the synchronous chats online space. Facebook, on the other hand, incorporates part of synchronous chats (messaging), asynchronous discussion forums (such as wall posts and groups), and interactive video-and-voice (profile pictures and profile videos). Facebook is unique that it incorporates all three of these categories; this is a new type of online space and was probably not thought of when The Psychology of the Internet was written.

David,
While reading your post, I could not be detracted from the fact that you are a musician. Not only do I write and record songs myself, but I feel as if musicians have great potential in making this class interesting due to the fact that their writing can be very deep and provocative.
Without being intense, I see that your writing is very engaging and I admire that since I feel my writing style is very similar. I was easily emotionally attached to this post however, in my opinion, I think refraning from statements such as "this is me in a nutshell" might be a good idea since I feel that you put yourself under one label and one label only: a person that wants to work for a music company. If you feel you create good music, why not shoot for the stars? If you are familiar with YouTube legend, Tay Zonday, you know that anything is possible. Good job on the post and good luck in all your endeavors.
