Assignment #1 - Introducing myself and interests

  1. Hello Comm 245 and the rest of the blogosphere! My name is Saidu Ezike, a Senior PAM Major/Comm minor. As much as I want to tell you guys my life story, I can’t since I may end up writing an Autobiography and don’t want to ruin it for you. I will say, however, I aspire to be a broadcast journalist and am going to grad school for it. Hopefully I get accepted into the Syracuse Newhouse School of Communications, alma matter of Bob Costas!
I will have to admit, on occasion, my views may be slightly different from the norm which sometimes makes room for innovation in the study of social interaction. I’ve been told that I’m a pretty good at being funny as well as writing and delivering speeches, poems, rap songs and other forms of verbal and written expression. This is probably why I have a news anchoring talent. If there’s anything else you need to know, you can check my facebook profile or ask me.
  2. The internet phenomenon that I am most interested in is the one I hate the most: predators using the internet to commit crimes. I am most interested in the older guys who use the younger girls for sex. I first got interested in the “phenomenon” while watching MSNBC’s Dateline To Catch a Predator series and realizing how horrible these people can act. Since people can use the internet to send photos, these predators send nude photos to young, innocent girls and talk extremely dirty to them. I don’t fully understand their motives aside from the fact that they are lonely and they feel more comfortable “spitting game” behind a computer screen rather than in person and maybe when I learn the psychology behind the social computing, I’ll be able to better understand these predators. In this show, these people do eventually visit the girl decoy and get arrested but I don't think they would try hitting on a 14 year old girl in the street. I’ve also always learned that in order to tackle a situation, you must know and understand both sides even if the other side is uncomfortable. This is one of the issues that I intend on tackling as a journalist.
  3. This internet phenomenon would fall under the synchronous chats online space. I don’t feel that many internet phenomena would have to classified as an alternate online space from the ones presented by Wallace since she is broad enough in describing the spaces. I do feel, however, that there may be some exceptions to the rules
